As performance development managers, we have a responsibility to help elucidate and evaluate potential professional development pathways, and identify one that best suits a given employee. We have purposefully designed pods/teams for new employees to join vs. a more traditional matrix/pool staffing approach in many other consulting firms. This several benefits to the employee. It helps the new employee with continuity in staffing in the early stage of their career, preventing the need to work across several team leads each with different expectations, styles, and priorities.

The mentoring and coaching from a single individual also allows for a clear set of objectives, focused priorities and feedback, and a single set of timelines that allows for predictability and improved work/life balance. As employees continue to develop/grow and gain confidence/experience, we also strive to cross-staff across teams to ensure exposure to a variety of clients, engagements and business questions, as well as managerial styles.
